I was never, ever, ever going to make soap. Summer after summer inside my lil’ shoppe on Put-in-Bay, visitors would come in and ask if I was the one who made the bars of soap in our shoppe. My answer for two summers, “Oh, I don’t have time for that. I’ll never, ever make soap. These bars are made by a nice woman on the mainland.”
I guess I need my mouth washed out with soap for telling a lie, because now, for four years, I’ve been making soap. And, I LOVE IT!
The reason I love it? Because, just like all the products I’ve developed, I get to decide what ingredients go inside. And, I’m one picky lady.
Pure organic African Shea Butter, Olive Oil, Organic Coconut Oil, Hexane-free Castor Oil and then whatever plant or herbs, along with essential oils, are inside my bars. Of course, I also have to saponify the soap using lye and water. (My soaps are vegan – no lard or beeswax or goat’s milk.) The soaps I create are safe and gentle for all of the family. And, did I mention they smell amaaaazing?
Soap making is like baking. My measurements have to be precise for the soap to saponify (there’s that fancy word again) I love using big words like saponification – the process of lye and water mixing with oils to create a luscious bar of soap – I sound so smart, don’t I? Or, not…
When making soap, I also get to look like a real scientist/chemist because I have to wear protective eyewear, long gloves and sleeves. Or else, I could go blind. Or get severely burnt by the lye and water. When combining the two ingredients, lots of heat is created and this can cause burns.
Like baking! Except I don’t think I can go blind when baking cookies. Just maybe get a bit chubby.
I hope this quick lil’ blog gets you intrigued enough to either 1. Make your own soap. OR 2. Buy one of my hand-crafted bars.
Love,
Christie AKA Boss Lady
